WASHINGTON, February 13, 2025 – “Among the impressive list of higher education institutions earning new Research One (R1) Carnegie Classifications, Howard University (DC) became the first historically Black college and university in the nation to achieve this distinction. An R1 is the highest research activity designation awarded.
While Howard is a private institution, it is an affiliate AASCU member.
Howard University’s impressive research portfolio includes the Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease and the Howard University Cancer Center.
Congratulations to Howard University President Ben Vinson III and the dedicated members of the research team on this remarkable achievement. We are celebrating this historic milestone with the HU community.”
