Markya Reed

Markya Reed is a graduate assistant with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), pursuing a master’s degree in applied sociology. She supports the center’s immersive experience, workshops, and programs. Reed hopes to foster opportunities for cross-sector collaboration and create environments that allow members of the UMBC community to come together and create positive change both on and off campus. As an undergraduate, Reed led Alternative Spring Break programs related to food security and homelessness in Baltimore City and served as a coach for UMBC’s immersive leadership for social impact program. She also served as a senator and vice president of UMBC’s Student Government Association. Reed currently serves as a Peaceworker fellow through the Shriver Center and has worked extensively with immigrant youth and families in Baltimore City. She served as a youth development promoter with Peace Corps, Costa Rica, and is dedicated to positive youth development and empowerment.
